If you’re looking for an affordable, fuel efficient car with all wheel drive, you really should be looking at the Subaru Impreza Hatch. This latest model has had several new refinements, with an emphasis of fuel efficiency and comfort. This marks a definite departure from the heritage of the WRX, which has become its own car. Subaru are working hard to make the Impreza range a distinct brand to compete in the sub compact market.

The recently redesigned Impreza has improved gas mileage by removing excess weight, installing a continuously variable transmission and adding a new smaller, efficient engine. The engine is a 2.0 litre boxer four cylinder, it produces 148 hp and 145 lbs of torque. The last generation had 170 hp and 170 lbs of torque produced from a 2.5 litre engine. Of course, this means that the new Impreza is slower, as it’s now more of a family car. Buyers seeking more power should be looking at the WRX range. The trade off for the Impreza however, is that fuel economy is now up to 36 mpg on highways and up to 27 mpg on an urban cycle. There is a quicker 5 speed manual transmission available, but it should be noted that highway use drops to 33 mpg and in the city 25 mpg. These are impressive figures for an all wheel drive vehicle.

The vehicle styling is focused with sleek headlights, squared bumpers and integrated fender flares. The interior is functional with a 3 spoke steering wheel that feels sporty and ergonomic controls mounted on a central stack. Subaru have installed a new infotainment system named Starlink. This can connect via Bluetooth to the drivers smartphone, connecting to Aha Radio accessing web content such as Slacker, Rhapsody and MOG among thousands of other stations. An optional navigation system can also be fitted.

There are three trim levels available, Premium, Sport Premium and Sport Limited. The all wheel drive is standard across the entire range and it provides a sure footed drive in slippery conditions. The relatively small size, combined with the more than capable chassis give a nimble feel and the suspension although firm is comfortable.
